In 1983 the water works was sold to a private owner from Woodstock, Ill named Matt Stahl. He ran the water works under the name of LeMars Water Company for around five (5) years. After many complaints from the Citizens of LeMars, the City began condemnation proceedings against the Private Company, and received ownership of the water works in June of 1988.
The Water Department has (1) Water Superintendent (1) Water Treatment Plant Operator(4) full-time Water Operators and (1) full-time Meter Reader. The Department operates and maintains over 71 miles of underground water main, 603 fire hydrants, over 1,000 underground main line valves, (1)one million gallon elevated tower all in the water distribution system.
The meter reader reads over 4286 meters monthly and helps with the maintenance of those meters.
The Water Department also operates the water treatment plant located in the SW part of town. This consists of a 6 million gallon per day Iron and Manganese Removal Plant, 6 - Dakota Aquifer Wells that pump from 600 to 1400 gpms (gallons per minute). Also at the Treatment and Field Service Facility Area, there is a 1.5 million gallon underground reservoir and high service pumping station.
