2019 Ice Cream Days & Sesquicentennial Celebration

Saturday, June 15th, Ice Cream Days/Sesqui Events:

9:00 a.m. • Grill ‘n’ Chill Rib Rally sponsored by Midstates Bank, O’Toole Park, 500 Central Avenue NE - Join with us on the east side of O’Toole Park for the 10th Annual Ice Cream Days Rib Cook-off. Preparations begin at 9:00 a.m.; judging begins at 4:00 p.m. There is one category. Electric grillers will be required to provide your electricity. Entry fee is $25 with 100% payback. Questions can be emailed to Kris at g.dreckman@hotmail.com. Or test your skills by competing in a cook’s choice pork loin contest. Entry forms will be available with a $10 sign-up fee with 100% payout. Sweet treats are compliments of Blue Bunny®.

9:00 a.m. • Ice Cream Days Parade - Bring blankets & lawn chairs to enjoy one of the best parades in Northwest Iowa! Featured will be all Shriner units; the Potentate has declared a “Temple Movement” for Ice Cream days this year. You will also see the magnificent costumes of the Estrella’s De Jalisco and be entertained by Groove Inc. Local talent will include the Le Mars Community Middle & High School Band, Le Mars Community High School Band graduates and Gehlen Catholic Competition Marching Band. There will also be entries from various businesses, along with the 125 foot ‘Tractor Train’. The Parade will travel along Central Avenue starting at 8th Street South and continuing to 6th Street North, then East on 6th Street to the Fairgrounds.

***Following the Parade, Performance by Groove Inc. Foster Park, 600 Central Avenue SE - Groove Inc. is a drumline from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

***Following the Parade until 1:00 p.m. • Kids’ Color Fun sponsored by Iowa State Bank, Foster Park in the Gazebo Kids join us for a FREE, fun and creative project. Add your personal flair by coloring in the custom designed 2019 Ice Cream Days T-shirt. Yours to take home and enjoy!

9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. • Disc Golf Tournament, West Floyd Disc Golf Course, very west end of 3rd St. SW next to West Floyd Park - Everyone is welcome to attend the 6th annual Ice Cream Days Disc Golf Tournament. Participate or come as a spectator. Four divisions: Youth ($10), Women ($10), Amateur ($10), and Advanced ($15). Cash payouts and prizes given to each division, pin prizes at every hole, door prizes and raffle items also offered. Registration is on-site the day of the event from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Tee-off starts at 10:00 a.m. Discs available for sale on-site. Free ice cream treats compliments of Blue Bunny®. Tournament hosted by Le Mars Disc Golf Club.

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. • Art in the Park, Foster Park, 600 Central Avenue SE - See your friends at Foster Park, plus artists, crafters and professional vendors! Food, fun and entertainment for all ages. Vendors will offer everything from professional art to crafts, purses to gift items. Food vendors will be set-up in Foster Park offering a wide variety of items: Kettle Corn, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, brats, hot dogs, chili dogs, BBQ pulled pork, pizza, cheeseballs, chili-cheese fries, funnel cake fries, nachos, super nachos, chips, fried Oreos. Beverages will include pop, water, lemonade.

10:30 a.m. • Downtown Architectural Tours - Le Mars Arts Center, 200 Central Avenue SE - The Le Mars Historic Preservation Commission will provide an hour-long educational tour highlighting the architectural elements that are visible on downtown buildings.

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. • Founders Day Luncheon - Le Mars Convention Center, Lower Level, 275 12th Street SE - Local historians will provide an overview of Le Mars history, along with music and entertainment. Food prepared by Habitué’ Catering. Cost is $35 per person. Call 712-546-8821 by June 7 for reservations.

1:00 - 3:00 p.m. • Airplane, Helicopter & Drone Exhibition featuring the Fly Boys of Iowa sponsored by Northwest Bank & Le Mars Wings R/C Club. North of the Airport on Holton Drive - Entertainment for the whole family! Watch large scale airplanes, helicopters and drones perform incredible acrobatic stunts. Current AMA license holders may participate. No admission fee. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the aerial entertainment. Sweet treats compliments of Blue Bunny®.

3:00 - 4:00 p.m. • Airplane Pilot Assisted Flying for adults and kids - try your skills at flying one of the remote-controlled model airplanes. Sign up required by calling Northwest Bank at 712-546-7811 by June 7. Intervals of 5 minutes for assisted flying.

1:30 - 3:30 p.m. • Tours of Gehlen Catholic School, 709 Plymouth Street NE

1:30 p.m. • Genealogical Society, Le Mars Public Library, 46 1st Street SW - The NW Iowa Genealogy Society, along with any guests, may gather at the Le Mars Public Library. The members will then be split into groups for transport to the cemeteries for the Sesquicentennial Cemetery Tour beginning at 2:00 p.m.

2:00 p.m. • The Dash and The Dirt - Le Mars Memorial Cemetery and Calvary Cemetery 
The Dash: Life between the years. The Dirt: Interesting information on how individuals made an impact on the community. Escorted tours will begin concurrently at each cemetery at 2:00 p.m., with subsequent tours beginning at 2:45 p.m.

2:00 p.m. • Plymouth County Veterans Memorial Park, 10th Street and 3rd Avenue SE - A peaceful park that is dedicated to honoring our veterans. Monuments, sculptures and tributes to veteran’s that fought for America’s freedom.  Le Mars veterans will serve as tour guides. Accessible to persons with disabilities.

4:00 p.m. • Polo Match Exhibition sponsored by Steve & Danna Schuster and Greg & Janna Brandt. Plymouth County Fairgrounds, 500 4th Avenue NE - Polo was a major sport in Le Mars in the 1880s. Spend an afternoon watching and learning how polo is played. The Des Moines Polo Club will play an exhibition match. The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring goals by hitting a small hard ball with a long-handled wooden mallet through the opposing team’s goal. Lawn chairs and blankets encouraged. Coolers allowed.

5:00 - 7:00 p.m. • Fishing Derby, Le Mars Municipal Park Pond - Children 12 & under can join the Le Mars Sportsman’s Club for an evening of fishing. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m.; children may fish from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by the awarding of prizes. Refreshments for participants and their families.

6:30 p.m. • Ice Cream Bash, Olson Cultural Event Center, 33 1st Street NE - The 2019 Ice Cream Bash will feature the Nations Top Party Band, ‘Party Crashers’, to cap off Ice Cream Days. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with music starting at 7:30 p.m. The ‘Party Crashers’ will play a 4-hour set packed with high energy and cover songs from all genres. $15 tickets can be purchased at the gate. Wells Blue Bunny® will be the presenting sponsor.
